Excessive exposure to acrylamide may cause problems in the male fertility glands. Acrylamid is also a known cancer causing substance and has been linked to cancer in the large bowel, bladder and kidney.
Products which may contain acrylamide include shampoos, foam baths and hair fixatives. The chemical is known for its thickening abilities.
Acrylamide may also cause genetic malformations. It can be inhaled and cause redness in the eyes and irritation to the skin. It causes damage to the nervous system causing numbness in certain areas.
Acrylamide is also found in food like potatoes, grain products and coffee. Studies indicate that the increased production of acrylamide may be due to prolonged cooking such as frying, roasting or baking. The FDA has been studying this chemical since 2002 when it was first discovered. Although they are still unsure how the chemical develops when cooking, the FDA still maintains the importance of eating a well balanced and healthy diet.
